Welcome to the first KSDH Buddhist News of 2012 – a new year and a new name

Welcome to 2012 which promises to be a year filled with much activity for those interested in mindfulness training and/or Buddhist meditation. Programmes on offer throughout the year include regular weekly meditation, talks and courses on aspects of Buddhism including compassion, mindfulness, Tara Rokpa Therapy, death and dying, dreams and relieving stress, as well as a film festival on ‘Raising Consciousness’ and other activities to help us live happier, more mindful lives.

You will notice we have changed the name of our newsletter.  Our main reason for doing this is to acknowledge our direct spiritual connection to the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland, led by Dr Akong Tulku Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe Rinpoche, and to distinguish between the dharma (spiritual practice) aspect of our activities and our charity activities. All the other Kagyu centres in Southern Africa – that is, the centres in Cape Town, Johannesburg, the Rand and Groote Marico – are known as Kagyu Samye Dzong.

Rokpa Trust (both in Zimbabwe and internationally) is the charity wing of Kagyu Samye Ling, working in Tibet and other places in the world to ‘provide help where help is needed’. In Zimbabwe, this includes support to people living with HIV and women of disabled children.

We hold events both at the KDSH centre at 7a Ernies Lane, and at Rokpa Centre situated at 34 Quendon Road.

Special Buddha Days

There are four major Special Buddha days or “Festivals” (düchen) in a year which relate to the life of Buddha Shakyamuni. During these days, it is said that the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied 100 million times, so practice is strongly advised.

On the 22nd of February, it is the Tibetan New Year followed by Chotrul Düchen which is a festival that covers the first two weeks of the new year. It is celebrated because the Buddha displayed a miracle each day to increase the merit and devotion of future disciples. During these days extra practice is highly advised. This ends with a full moon on Thursday 8th of March a very auspicious time for practice. There will be Chenrezig that day from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm in the shrine room at 7a Ernies Lane.

A notice will go out with more information later, but please diarize!
