If we wish to reach a state of happiness within the Buddhist tradition one needs to do the practice of meditation. But meditation cannot stand alone and needs both study and contemplation to make it complete.
The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa: “If someone were to try to meditate without having heard any teachings whatsoever and without having done the slightest amount of contemplation, then this would not bring forth any result.”
We will study/contemplate topics which will improve our meditation and thus help us light our way on the path to happiness.
Marpa said that hearing and contemplating the teachings is like a torch that illuminates the darkness because if one has this source of light, one can see where one is going.
