SUMMARY:Meeting Chenrezig\, the Buddha of Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Instructions on the Four-Armed Chenrezig Practice \nwith Lama Rinchen Palmo \nWednesday\, 16 September | 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm \nWe are delighted to welcome Lama Rinchen Palmo for an evening of instruction on the practice of Four-Armed Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara)\, the embodiment of boundless compassion. \nThis session is open to everyone\, whether you are new to the practice or have been reciting the Chenrezig sadhana for many years. Lama Rinchen Palmo will explain the meaning and structure of the practice\, offer guidance on visualisation and meditation\, and share practical advice on how to integrate Chenrezig practice into daily life. \nThis is a rare opportunity to receive authentic guidance from an experienced Vajrayana teacher and to deepen your understanding of one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most beloved practices of compassion. \nAll are warmly welcome. No cost for the session but dana/donations welcome. \n\nOf French descent\, Lama Rinchen Palmo is a highly experienced meditation teacher with excellent English\, who has spent more than twelve years in retreat and previously assisted in supervising the long retreats on Holy Isle. She specialises in the Vajrayana practices of Tibetan Buddhism and is one of three Western women to have been appointed as a lama within the Samye Ling mandala. \nRenowned for her compassionate\, practical and down-to-earth teaching style\, she currently resides in Belgium\, where she divides her time between Kagyu Samye Dzong Brussels and the Samye Meditation Gardens\, a retreat centre near the French border dedicated to nurturing both inner and outer ecology.

SUMMARY:Refuge and Precepts with Lama Yeshe Rinpoche
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche will offer Refuge and Lay Precepts before returning to Scotland. \nThis is a precious opportunity for anyone who wishes to take refuge for the first time\, renew or deepen their commitment to the path\, or take or re-take the lay precepts. This ceremony is open to all — whether you feel newly inspired or simply wish to reconnect with your intention. \nIf you would like to take refuge\, please email johannesburg@kagyu.org.za so that a refuge card can be prepared for you. \nWhat is Refuge?\nA refuge ceremony is a formal and heartfelt step on the Buddhist path. In taking refuge\, one places one’s trust in the Buddha (the awakened teacher)\, the Dharma (the teachings)\, and the Sangha (realised beings). Through this ceremony\, you consciously align yourself with the path to awakening and compassion. \nThe Lay Precepts\nLay precepts are simple yet profound ethical commitments that support a mindful and compassionate life. Most commonly\, these are the Five Precepts: \n\nTo refrain from taking life\nTo refrain from taking what is not given\nTo refrain from harmful sexual conduct\nTo refrain from false or hurtful speech\nTo refrain from intoxicants that cloud the mind\n\nYou may take as many precepts as you feel ready for\, and for whatever duration you wish — for a day\, a specific period\, or as a lifelong commitment. \nOfferings\nIt is customary on joyful occasions such as this to make an offering. You may wish to offer a khatag (white scarf\, available in our shop for R20)\, flowers\, a plate of food\, or dana according to your means and intention. \nAfter the ceremony\, we will gather for tea\, followed by Chenrezig Prayers for Peace. \nAll are warmly welcome.

SUMMARY:Dreams and Such Stuff with Dónal Creedon
DESCRIPTION:A Day Retreat with Dónal Creedon \n\n\n\n\n“We are such stuff\nAs dreams are made on; and our little life \nIs rounded with a sleep.“\nWilliam Shakespeare\, The Tempest\n\n\n\nTeaching and meditation on our ways of seeing and relating to outer and inner realities. In the age of fake news\, misinformation and AI\, this is not so straightforward.\n\n\n\n\n“In a wilderness of mirrors. What will the spider do\,\nSuspend its operations\,…?” T.S. Eliot\n\n\n\nAccording to the Buddhadharma\, ‘the view’\, how we see ourselves and the world\, is crucial. It is the point where suffering begins and ends. Here we will pay particular attention to the view and way of being encompassed by the word Bodhicitta\, a word that implies awakening intelligence and love.\n\nNote this is not about dream interpretation or lucid dreaming. It concerns life\, death and everything in between!\n\n\n\nPlease bring a plate of vegetarian food to share at lunch\, and some treats for tea time.\n\nCost\n\nThere is no charge for these talks\, but donations are welcome. Dharma centres\, which offer teachings and meditation practices that benefit all beings\, are largely sustained through the generosity of their supporters. Donations play a crucial role in ensuring the continuation of these teachings\, providing resources for the upkeep of the centre\, supporting teachers\, and enabling the running of retreats\, courses\, and community activities.\n\n\n\nAbout Dónal Creedon\n\nDónal Creedon is a highly respected Buddhist meditation teacher\, deeply appreciated for his warmth\, openness\, and sincerity. He brings many years of experience to his teaching\, grounded in deep personal practice and study. He trained extensively with masters of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in Europe\, India\, and Nepal\, including long periods of intensive retreat.  Dónal’s teaching is rooted in this tradition\, while also being informed by his time at the Krishnamurti Centre in Varanasi\, where he served as the resident Buddhist scholar. Dónal’s approach integrates Buddhist meditative training with the radical spirit of inquiry inspired by J. Krishnamurti\, offering a path that is both contemplative and deeply questioning.

SUMMARY:Skilfull Meditation with Ani Lhamo
DESCRIPTION:The Kagyu Lineage is often called the ‘Practice Lineage’.  It offers a huge range of mind training methods.  What are they and why do they exist? What are their various benefits? \nWe will take a look at some methods: prayer\, contemplation\, spiritual music\, the use of musical instruments\, dance\, and some of the many forms of ritual. \nThe aim of this talk is to clarify the roles of these methods and which of them might be helpful to us as we progress on the path. \nCost\nThere is no charge for these talks\, but donations are welcome. Dharma centres\, which offer teachings and meditation practices that benefit all beings\, are largely sustained through the generosity of their supporters. Donations play a crucial role in ensuring the continuation of these teachings\, providing resources for the upkeep of the centre\, supporting teachers\, and enabling the running of retreats\, courses\, and community activities. \nTeacher\nGelongma (Ani) Lhamo is a fully ordained Buddhist nun from Scotland who completed a four-year cloistered retreat in 1993 and has lived at Samye Ling Monastery ever since. An experienced teacher of meditation and Dharma\, she has also served as Secretary and assistant to Abbot Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche at Samye Ling Monastery for many years. Through her work\, she has learned to integrate meditation and the Buddha’s teachings into her busy daily life. \n

SUMMARY:Remembering Akong Tulku Rinpoche
DESCRIPTION:Commemoration of the Parinirvana of Akong Tulku Rinpoche\nWe warmly invite you to join us on Sunday\, 5 October\, for a special screening of the film Akong – A Remarkable Life\, held in honour of the Parinirvana of Akong Tulku Rinpoche. \nKSDJ Temple\, 43 Floss Street\, Kensington \n+27 62 913 4436 \njohannesbug@kagyu.org.za \n10:30 am: Film Screening: Akong – A Remarkable Life12:00 pm: Tea  – a chance to share refreshments together after the film. Please bring a plate of vegetarian food to share.12:30 pm: Chenrezik Puja – concluding the gathering\, with all manis dedicated to the Million Mani Project for the swift return of Akong Rinpoche and the long life of Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche. \nAbout the Film \nAkong – A Remarkable Life traces the extraordinary journey of Akong Tulku Rinpoche\, Tibetan Buddhist master\, humanitarian\, and co-founder of Samye Ling\, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the West. \nBorn in Eastern Tibet\, Rinpoche was recognised as a tulku at an early age and became abbot of Dolma Lhakang monastery. Political turmoil in 1959 forced him to flee Tibet on a perilous journey across the Himalayas\, during which only 13 of 300 companions survived. Near death in a mountain cave\, Akong Rinpoche vowed that\, if he lived\, he would dedicate his life to helping others. \nHe eventually reached India\, where he worked with refugee children and later travelled to Britain with his lifelong friend Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Together\, in 1967\, they established Samye Ling\, which became a flourishing spiritual centre and the heart of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. \nRinpoche’s vision extended far beyond monastic life. He co-founded ROKPA International\, a humanitarian organisation that continues his work in Tibet\, Nepal\, Zimbabwe\, South Africa\, and elsewhere—providing schools\, orphanages\, medical care\, and food to those most in need. His life was defined by his guiding principle: “Only the impossible is worth doing.” \nThe film includes moving accounts from those whose lives he touched\, revealing how his compassion-in-action inspired thousands of people worldwide. \nAlthough Akong Rinpoche’s life ended tragically in Chengdu\, China\, on 8 October 2013\, his legacy continues to shine as a source of hope and guidance. \nRSVP: \nKSDJ Temple\, 43 Floss Street\, Kensington \n+27 62 913 4436 \njohannesbug@kagyu.org.za

SUMMARY:The Jewel Ornament of Liberation Study Group
DESCRIPTION:This is an ongoing monthly study group\, facilitated by Alan Muller. We will study the text The Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, by Je Gampopa\, which is one of the five most important texts of the Karma Kagyu lineage. \n“This is one of the primary Kagyu texts and of immense relevance and benefit to all practitioners regardless of what stage they are at. In addition to providing a step-by-step outline of the path to Buddhahood\, the teachings on the innate Buddha nature can provide students with the confidence to enter the path\, while those already on the path can find in its twenty-one chapters much to inspire and keep them moving along the unmistaken path to Liberation.”  Lama Karma Shedrup \n  \nJe Gampopa (1079–1153) \nThis study group is suited for both beginners and people who have been on the path for some time. \n“About 1000 years ago one extraordinary individual\, Gampopa achieved Buddhahood by working with his Lama Milarepa and decided to set down this Buddhist path in a single book that he called The Jewel Ornament of Liberation.” Quote from Clark Johnson in Thrangu Rinpoche’s commentary on the text. \nIt is an ongoing group which meets once a month. After the first couple of sessions\, the group will be closed\, and no one can join in. \nThis is a hybrid event—both in-person and online—although it is recommended that you attend in person. \nOngoing Study Group Dates\n25 October\, 29 November – Saturday mornings – 3 hours with a break. \nBring a plate of treats to share for Tea. \nCost:\nThere is no charge for this study group. However\, donations are welcomed – a suggested donation of R50 per person. \nFacilitator:\nAlan Muller took refuge in 1997 with Akong Rinpoche. SUMMARY:Training the Mind for Mental Resilience with Lama Zangpo
DESCRIPTION:A Weekend Introduction to Lojong \nLojong\, a Tibetan Buddhist practice\, literally means mind training  –  Lo means “mind” and jong means “to train.”  Its purpose is to transform the way we relate to our experiences—especially difficult ones—so that instead of reacting with frustration\, anger\, or fear\, we cultivate compassion\, wisdom\, and resilience. \nAt the heart of lojong are 59 slogans or aphorisms\, originally compiled by the 12th-century teacher Geshe Chekawa. These slogans are not just philosophical ideas—they are practical instructions for daily life. They help practitioners shift their perspective from self-centeredness to a broader awareness rooted in empathy and kindness. \nIn our fast-paced\, stressful world\, lojong offers a powerful toolkit for building mental resilience. Rather than just managing stress\, it helps transform the mind at its root—changing how we perceive\, react\, and relate to the world. \nYou don’t need to be a Buddhist to benefit from mind training. Its principles align with modern psychological approaches to emotional regulation\, cognitive reframing\, and compassion-based living. It’s as much about practical mental training as it is about spiritual growth. \nProgramme\nSaturday 14 June  \n\n10:30 am to 4:00 pm\nBring and Share Vegetarian Lunch\n\nSunday 15 June \n\n10:30 am to 1:00 pm\n\nCost\nThere is no charge for this weekend workshop\, but donations are welcome to help cover centre costs. \nTeacher\n\nLama Zangpo began his meditation journey in 1996 after meeting Lama Yeshe Rinpoche at KSDJ\, where he was a resident volunteer.
\nIt will be an ongoing group which meets once a month. After the first couple of sessions\, the group will be closed and people can no longer join. \nThis is a hybrid event—both in-person and online—although it is recommended that you attend in person. \nZoom link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88695915221?pwd=JoSybe4BYxkOuVaUBpIQ7yi2PFafHc.1 \nMeeting ID: 886 9591 5221\nPasscode: Gampopa \nOngoing Study Group Dates\n10 May\, 31 May\, 28 June – Saturday mornings – 3 hours with a break. \nBring a plate of treats to share for Tea. \nCost:\nThere is no charge for this study group. However\, donations are welcomed – a suggested donation of R50 per person. \nFacilitator:\nAlan Muller took refuge in 1997 with Akong Rinpoche. In 2003\, he completed a one-year closed retreat under the guidance of Lama Yeshe Rinpoche at Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland. During this period\, he took novice monk vows. Alan remained a novice monk for six years and now presents courses and retreats as a layperson.
