SUMMARY:Getting to Know Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:with Alan Muller \nIntroduction to Buddhism \nThe basic principles of Buddhism will be explained\, with time set aside for contemplation and meditation. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the topics covered and ask questions. \nThis session is suitable for everyone\, whether you are completely new to Buddhism or have many years of experience. \nEach month\, we will explore new topics and introduce meditation practices that you can continue at home. \n\nTime: 10:30 to 11:30 AM \n\nDate: 4 October 2026\nFor this month’s Getting to Know Buddhism session\, we will look at the practice of Ngöndro. \nLama Rinchen emphasised the importance of Ngöndro practice in her teachings at the temple. As a follow-up\, we will explore the Ngöndro practices and begin with the first instructions for this wonderful journey. \nNgöndro\, meaning “that which goes before”\, is the foundational practice of Vajrayana Buddhism. It consists of four ordinary reflections and four extraordinary practices. Through these practices\, one gradually purifies negative karma and obscurations\, accumulates merit and wisdom\, and deepens renunciation\, compassion\, devotion and bodhicitta. In the Kagyu tradition\, ngöndro is not simply a preliminary exercise but a profound training that contains the essential elements of the entire path to awakening. \nThis session is for people who would like to start Ngöndro\, those who have already started and would appreciate the support of a group to continue\, and anyone who is simply curious to find out what Ngöndro is all about. \n\n\n\nNo charge for these sessions\, but dana for the facilitator and centre would be appreciated. Please also bring some tea treats to share.\n\n\nAlan Muller took refuge in 1997 with Akong Rinpoche. In 2003\, he completed a one-year closed retreat under the guidance of Lama Yeshe Rinpoche at Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland. During this period\, he took novice monk vows. Alan remained a novice monk for six years and now presents courses and retreats as a layperson.

SUMMARY:Remembering Akong Rinpoche - Sun 11 Oct
DESCRIPTION:We will mark the Parinirvana Anniversary of Akong Tulku Rinpoche with offerings of Dharma practice and khatags (white scarves). \nHis extraordinary journey began in Kham\, Eastern Tibet\, and took him first on horseback and then on foot across the Himalayas to India. From there he travelled to the UK—first to Oxford and eventually to the Scottish Borders. What began as one remarkable life journey grew into a much larger vision: bringing the Kagyu Dharma into the modern world and creating places where people could encounter Buddhist teachings in a practical\, open and compassionate way. \nTogether with Rob Nairn\, Akong Rinpoche helped establish the southern African Kagyu Dharma centres\, including two Samye Dzongs in Johannesburg\, Cape Town\, and Harare\, as well as Tara Rokpa Retreat Centre in the North West. His legacy reaches far beyond buildings and organisations. Through the Samye Dzong centres\, retreat spaces\, humanitarian work and Tara Rokpa Therapy\, his emphasis on compassion expressed through practical action continues to touch lives. As we remember him this month\, we celebrate not only the extraordinary path he travelled\, but the many paths that opened for others because he walked it. \n10:00 – 11:00 Guided meditations from Taming the Tiger with Alan Muller \n11:00 – 11:45 Tea – Bring and Share Tea Treats \n11:45 – 12:45 Chenrezik and Calling the Lama From Afar\, Offering Khatags to Akong Rinpoche \nNo cost for this session but Dana for the facilitator and the centre are welcome.
