SUMMARY:Preparing for Death\, Living Fully
DESCRIPTION:A Day Teaching with Lama Rinchen Palmo\nSaturday\, 19 September | 10:00 am – 4:00 pm \nThe Buddha taught that contemplating impermanence is not a pessimistic practice\, but one that awakens us to the preciousness of life. By understanding the inevitability of change and death\, we learn to live with greater wisdom\, compassion and purpose. \nDuring this day of teachings\, Lama Rinchen Palmo will explore the Buddhist understanding of death and dying\, drawing on timeless teachings that remain deeply relevant in our modern world. The day will offer practical guidance on preparing for death—not only as the final transition of life\, but as a way of enriching how we live each day. \nThrough teachings\, meditation and discussion\, participants will discover how reflecting on impermanence can help reduce fear\, cultivate acceptance\, and inspire a more meaningful and compassionate way of living. \nWhether you are curious about Buddhist teachings on death\, supporting a loved one through illness\, or simply seeking to live more fully in the present\, this teaching offers profound wisdom and practical tools for everyday life. \nThere is no cost for these teachings but dana for the teacher and donations to the centre to help with the flight costs are welcome. \nPlease bring a plate of vegetarian food to share at lunch. \n\nOf French descent\, Lama Rinchen Palmo is a highly experienced meditation teacher with excellent English\, who has spent more than twelve years in retreat and previously assisted in supervising the long retreats on Holy Isle. She specialises in the Vajrayana practices of Tibetan Buddhism and is one of three Western women to have been appointed as a lama within the Samye Ling mandala. \nRenowned for her compassionate\, practical and down-to-earth teaching style\, she currently resides in Belgium\, where she divides her time between Kagyu Samye Dzong Brussels and the Samye Meditation Gardens\, a retreat centre near the French border dedicated to nurturing both inner and outer ecology

SUMMARY:Finding Calm and Kindness
DESCRIPTION:A Day Retreat of Meditation with Lama Rinchen Palmo \nSunday\, 20 September | 10:00 am – 4:00 pm \nIn the midst of our busy and often demanding lives\, it is easy to become overwhelmed\, distracted and disconnected from ourselves and others. This day of meditation offers an opportunity to slow down\, cultivate inner peace\, and reconnect with the qualities of calmness and compassion that lie within us all. \nDuring this retreat day\, Lama Rinchen Palmo will introduce two of Buddhism’s most practical and transformative meditation practices. \nCalm Abiding (Shamatha) Meditation helps settle the mind\, developing greater clarity\, stability and inner peace. As the mind becomes calmer\, we are better able to respond to life’s challenges with wisdom rather than reactivity. \nLoving-kindness (Metta) Meditation gently opens the heart\, cultivating kindness towards ourselves\, our loved ones\, those we find difficult\, and ultimately all beings. This simple yet profound practice helps develop compassion\, emotional resilience and a deeper sense of connection with others. \nThroughout the day retreat\, Lama Rinchen Palmo will provide clear instruction\, guided meditation sessions\, and opportunities to ask questions\, making the practices accessible whether you are completely new to meditation or have many years of experience. \nThere is no charge for this day. In keeping with the Buddhist tradition\, dana (offerings) for the teacher are warmly welcomed\, and donations towards Lama Rinchen Palmo’s travel expenses would be greatly appreciated. \nPlease bring a plate of vegetarian food to share for our community lunch. \nAll are warmly welcome. Whether you are taking your very first steps in meditation or wishing to deepen an existing practice\, this day offers a wonderful opportunity to cultivate a calmer mind and a kinder heart. \nRenowned for her compassionate\, practical and down-to-earth teaching style\, she currently resides in Belgium\, where she divides her time between Kagyu Samye Dzong Brussels and the Samye Meditation Gardens\, a retreat centre near the French border dedicated to nurturing both inner and outer ecology.

SUMMARY:Getting to Know Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:with Alan Muller \nIntroduction to Buddhism \nThe basic principles of Buddhism will be explained\, with time set aside for contemplation and meditation. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the topics covered and ask questions. \nThis session is suitable for everyone\, whether you are completely new to Buddhism or have many years of experience. \nEach month\, we will explore new topics and introduce meditation practices that you can continue at home. \n\nTime: 10:30 to 11:30 AM \n\nDate: 4 October 2026\nFor this month’s Getting to Know Buddhism session\, we will look at the practice of Ngöndro. \nLama Rinchen emphasised the importance of Ngöndro practice in her teachings at the temple. As a follow-up\, we will explore the Ngöndro practices and begin with the first instructions for this wonderful journey. \nNgöndro\, meaning “that which goes before”\, is the foundational practice of Vajrayana Buddhism. It consists of four ordinary reflections and four extraordinary practices. Through these practices\, one gradually purifies negative karma and obscurations\, accumulates merit and wisdom\, and deepens renunciation\, compassion\, devotion and bodhicitta. In the Kagyu tradition\, ngöndro is not simply a preliminary exercise but a profound training that contains the essential elements of the entire path to awakening. \nThis session is for people who would like to start Ngöndro\, those who have already started and would appreciate the support of a group to continue\, and anyone who is simply curious to find out what Ngöndro is all about. \n\n\n\nNo charge for these sessions\, but dana for the facilitator and centre would be appreciated. Please also bring some tea treats to share.\n\n\nAlan Muller took refuge in 1997 with Akong Rinpoche. In 2003\, he completed a one-year closed retreat under the guidance of Lama Yeshe Rinpoche at Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland. During this period\, he took novice monk vows. Alan remained a novice monk for six years and now presents courses and retreats as a layperson.

SUMMARY:Remembering Akong Rinpoche - Sun 11 Oct
DESCRIPTION:We will mark the Parinirvana Anniversary of Akong Tulku Rinpoche with offerings of Dharma practice and khatags (white scarves). \nHis extraordinary journey began in Kham\, Eastern Tibet\, and took him first on horseback and then on foot across the Himalayas to India. From there he travelled to the UK—first to Oxford and eventually to the Scottish Borders. What began as one remarkable life journey grew into a much larger vision: bringing the Kagyu Dharma into the modern world and creating places where people could encounter Buddhist teachings in a practical\, open and compassionate way. \nTogether with Rob Nairn\, Akong Rinpoche helped establish the southern African Kagyu Dharma centres\, including two Samye Dzongs in Johannesburg\, Cape Town\, and Harare\, as well as Tara Rokpa Retreat Centre in the North West. His legacy reaches far beyond buildings and organisations. Through the Samye Dzong centres\, retreat spaces\, humanitarian work and Tara Rokpa Therapy\, his emphasis on compassion expressed through practical action continues to touch lives. As we remember him this month\, we celebrate not only the extraordinary path he travelled\, but the many paths that opened for others because he walked it. \n10:00 – 11:00 Guided meditations from Taming the Tiger with Alan Muller \n11:00 – 11:45 Tea – Bring and Share Tea Treats \n11:45 – 12:45 Chenrezik and Calling the Lama From Afar\, Offering Khatags to Akong Rinpoche \nNo cost for this session but Dana for the facilitator and the centre are welcome.

SUMMARY:The Sutra of Living with Dónal Creedon
DESCRIPTION:‘Everyday is a journey and the journey itself is home’ – Bashō \nWe live in a world of tremendous pressure and speed. Violence and fear are everywhere. Like driftwood caught in a torrent moments of stillness and peace elude us. We seem to have lost the ability live naturally and gracefully with a sense of depth and ease. Yet it need not be so if we take the time to listen\, to reflect and to meditate. \nWe need to learn who we are. How our thoughts make problems out of nothing. Literally! Using the maps provided by the Buddha we read the sutra that is our daily life. A sutra which shows the sources of sorrow and its ending. \n10:00 am – 4:00 pm \nPlease bring lunch to share. \nNo cost for this teaching but donations for the centre to cover air tickets\, and dana for the teacher is welcome. \nAbout Dónal Creedon\nDónal Creedon is a highly respected Buddhist meditation teacher\, deeply appreciated for his warmth\, openness\, and sincerity. He brings many years of experience to his teaching\, grounded in deep personal practice and study. He trained extensively with masters of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in Europe\, India\, and Nepal\, including long periods of intensive retreat.  Dónal’s teaching is rooted in this tradition\, while also being informed by his time at the Krishnamurti Centre in Varanasi\, where he served as the resident Buddhist scholar. Dónal’s approach integrates Buddhist meditative training with the radical spirit of inquiry inspired by J. Krishnamurti\, offering a path that is both contemplative and deeply questioning. \n
