A Weekend Introduction to Lojong
Lojong, a Tibetan Buddhist practice, literally means mind training – Lo means “mind” and jong means “to train.” Its purpose is to transform the way we relate to our experiences—especially difficult ones—so that instead of reacting with frustration, anger, or fear, we cultivate compassion, wisdom, and resilience.
At the heart of lojong are 59 slogans or aphorisms, originally compiled by the 12th-century teacher Geshe Chekawa. These slogans are not just philosophical ideas—they are practical instructions for daily life. They help practitioners shift their perspective from self-centeredness to a broader awareness rooted in empathy and kindness.
In our fast-paced, stressful world, lojong offers a powerful toolkit for building mental resilience. Rather than just managing stress, it helps transform the mind at its root—changing how we perceive, react, and relate to the world.
You don’t need to be a Buddhist to benefit from mind training. Its principles align with modern psychological approaches to emotional regulation, cognitive reframing, and compassion-based living. It’s as much about practical mental training as it is about spiritual growth.
